Build a skincare routine 101

Skincare is one of the most important regimes that one needs to follow to not only look good but protect the health of the skin.

Especially in times like these, when pollution is omnipresent. Dust, dirt, harmful rays, and moisture can ruin your skin. Diet & food plays an important role in your skin’s wellbeing. But with time, the quality of diet & food is degrading every day and this can negatively affect your skin’s health.

All this can lead you to painful acne, hyperpigmentation, dull, flaky skin, just to name a few.
Here’s the good news, you can prohibit all this from happening if you follow a well-balanced skincare routine.

Although there are a lot of products available in the market. Thanks to the beauty industry for launching tons of products every single day. It’s more confusing than ever to select a product.

Here are a few tips that will help you build the best skincare routine for your skin.

1. Explore your skin

Before doing any skincare and experimenting with random products, it is important to know what type of skin you have.

What are the reactions your skin can have to an ingredient? What is the type of skin you’ve?

You can go to a dermatologist and have a thorough understanding of your skin type. Or there are a few methods through which you can predict your skin type at home.

Method 1 – Carbon Paper Test

You need carbon paper. You just have to take a piece of carbon paper and put it on your face for five minutes.

After five minutes, take the paper under a good light source. If your carbon paper has less amount of oil on it, you have dry skin.

In case your carbon paper has oil all over it, you most probably have oily skin. If your carbon paper has oil only where your nose and forehead are situated, you have combination skin.

Method 2 – Wash the face

This is an easy method. Wash your face with a mild cleanser and wait for a while. If your face becomes tight & dry, you have dry skin.

If your face is still oily, then you have oily skin. If your face only has oil on its forehead and nose, you have a Combination Skin.

2. Do it in the right order

When it comes to skincare, you must follow the right order. You cannot just layer one product over the other. If you do so, it can lead to acne, breakouts, and other problems.
For example, if you use moisturizer without washing your face. It will lead to acne breakout because you applied moisturizer over dirty oily skin, which clogged your pore.

1. Cleansing

First, cleanse your face thoroughly in the morning and night. It has a lot of dirt that accumulates over time; it needs to be cleaned. Otherwise, it can lead to acne and breakouts. Also, don’t over wash your face, it can lead to dry & dehydrated skin. It is recommended to wash your face 2 times a day, once in the morning and once at night.

2. Moisturizer

Now your skin is clean and toned. It’s time to moisturize it and lock in all the hydration and moisture.

You can use oil-based moisturizer if you have dry skin and water-based if you have oily skin. For combination skin, you can use any gentle moisturizer that suits your skin.

3. Sunscreen

One of the most underestimated products in the skincare routine is Sunscreen. Many people avoid it because of the white cast & oil it leaves behind. But, we can’t stress enough how important it is to protect your skin from sun rays and environmental conditions.

The major reason behind hyperpigmentation & acne scars is the tanning of the skin. Another important point to be noted is, UV rays can burn your skin which can further cause wrinkles.

4. Treatment

Include a treatment based product based on your skin concerns and if you don’t have a particular skin concern just ensure your skin is always hydrated.

3. Choosing the product

Before choosing a product, make sure you check its description. Whether it contains anything that you are allergic to.

Despite this, it’s always safe to do a patch test on your hand or behind the ear. If your skin does not show any harsh reaction to it, you can use it on your face and body.

Use the product consistently, as no product will give you results in one use. It takes 2-3 months to see a visible difference, so make sure you use the product for at least 3 months.
