How to soothe a skin breakout?

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions in the world, affecting up to 85% of young adults.

Traditional acne treatments, such as salicylic acid, niacinamide, or benzoyl peroxide, are the most effective. Still, they can be costly and have undesirable side effects, such as dryness, redness, and irritation.

This has prompted many people to seek natural acne treatment at home. In fact, according to a 2017 study, 77% of acne patients had tried alternative acne treatments.

Many home remedies lack scientific support, and more research on their efficacy is required. However, you still have options if you're looking for alternative treatments.

Honey and cinnamon mask

According to 2020 research, honey can kill the growth of acne on its own. This finding, however, does not necessarily imply that honey is an effective acne treatment. While honey and cinnamon anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties may help acne, more research is needed.

How to use it?

  1. Make a paste with 2 tablespoons of honey and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
  2. Apply the mask to your face after cleansing and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Remove the mask from your face and pat it dry.

Tea tree oil for spot treatment

In a small 2019 study, participants using a tea tree oil ointment for acne experienced less dry skin and irritation than benzoyl peroxide. Tea tree oil is highly concentrated, so dilute it before applying it to your skin.

How to use it?

  1. Mix one part tea tree oil with nine parts water.
  2. Apply the mixture to the affected areas with a cotton swab.

If required, apply moisturizer. As needed, repeat this process 1 to 2 times per day.

Aloe vera to soothe

Aloe vera is a tropical plant that produces a clear gel from its leaves. Aloe vera contains salicylic acid and sulfur, commonly used to treat acne. According to 2017 research, applying salicylic acid to the skin reduces acne.

How to use it?

  1. Using a spoon, scrape the gel from the aloe plant.
  2. As a moisturizer, apply the gel to clean the skin.
  3. Repeat 1–2 times daily or as desired.

You can also purchase aloe vera gel from a store, but make sure it is pure aloe with no added ingredients.

The bottom line

Acne is a common skin condition that a variety of factors can cause. Although some people may find conventional treatments such as salicylic acid, niacinamide, or benzoyl peroxide irritating. Many people prefer to use natural remedies. The majority of acne home remedies have not been proven to be clinically effective. Still, they are available as an alternative treatment option. However, if you have severe acne, you should see a dermatologist.
