When to start using anti-aging creams?

When to start using anti-aging creams?

Turning 30 is a big deal for most women out there. Not because of the number, but that is when we actually realise we are ageing through our very first signs of ageing such as sullen eyes and wrinkles.

And with hundreds and thousands of anti-ageing creams and skincare products, we are left confused to choose the right anti-ageing product for us. And with products classified as anti ageing creams for 20+, 30+, 40+ and 50+ age categories, we are even more confused about “when to start using anti-ageing creams”

Well if you are one too, keep reading to find out the answer.

The categories of ageing

Generally, ageing is categorised into two types. They are internal ageing. Internal ageing is when your skin cells start slowing down in producing chemicals that are essential for smooth and supple skin like collagen and elastin. This then reflects on our skin as external ageing as wrinkles, dark spots etc.

Factors that speeds up the ageing process

While it is a normal and natural process to age, here are a few factors that speed up our ageing:

Exposure to harmful rays:

Exposing ourselves to UV rays including UV-A and UV-B from the sun is exposing ourselves to cell damage and ageing. Even if we are staying indoors, we are knowingly or unknowingly exposing ourselves to harmful radiation. Even the blue light from our devices can induce ageing if used for a long time. That is why it is advised to use sunscreen whether we stay indoors are roam outdoors.

If you have noticed, our parents would have not aged as fast as we are ageing. The main reason for this is pollution. Just as the rate of pollution increases exponentially so does our ageing. Pollution causes our skin to dry and research says that dry and unprotected skin ages faster than hydrated and well-protected skin.

Facial expressions:

Yes, you read that right! Our facial expressions also play an important line in ageing. More smiles, fewer laugh lines!

Fluctuations in weight:

When there are high fluctuations in your weight all of a sudden, your body can’t take up all the changes quickly. Hence, the production of necessary hormones fluctuates resulting in ageing and other side effects.

Excessive smoking and alcohol intake:

Also, if you are a serial drinker or smoker, you are likely to age faster than anybody else. It is for the same reason as above, that the body can't take in all the changes all of a sudden, resulting in ageing.

Symptoms of ageing:

Some of the very first symptoms of ageing start around your eyes. It can be dark spots, wrinkles or even a sunken look under the eyes. Other symptoms may include,

  • The emergence of laugh lines
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Dry skin
  • Enlargement of pores
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Loosening of skin and so on.

What is the right age to start using anti-ageing products?

Doctors suggest that one can start using their anti-ageing products in their early 20s. However, the ageing process starts only at 25 internally and starts reflecting externally when you turn 30.

Bottom line

So the bottom line is that it is never too late or never too early to start using anti-ageing products.
